Although Halloween, celebrated this day, is now observed largely as a secular holiday, it is, as the eve of All Saints' Day, also a religious holiday among some Christians.
Halloween
Halloween, contraction of All Hallows’ Eve, a holiday observed on October 31, the evening before All Saints’ (or All Hallows’) Day. The celebration marks the day before the Western Christian feast of All Saints and initiates the season of Allhallowtide, which lasts three days and concludes with All Souls’ Day. In much of Europe and most of North America, observance of Halloween is largely nonreligious. Halloween had its origins in the festival of Samhain among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland. Michael Landon, original name Eugene Maurice Orowitz, (born October 31, 1936, Forest Hills, New York, U.S.—died July 1, 1991, Malibu, California), American television actor, director, and producer who was best known for his work on the series Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie.
Landon won a track-and-field scholarship (for javelin throwing) to the University of Southern California, but a torn ligament cut short his athletic career. In 1956 he began appearing in television dramas, and the following year he made his motion-picture debut in the cult classic I Was a Teenage Werewolf.
