The Emperor Has Arrived!

Director Ridley Scott’s sweeping historical epic Napoleon hits theaters on November 22. The film features Joaquin Phoenix as the Corsican who conquered Europe and Vanessa Kirby as Joséphine, the first empress of the French.

How accurate is Hollywood’s latest flirtation with the historical record? Well, the movie’s tagline is: He came from nothing. He conquered everything. However, the Bonapartes were minor nobility, Napoleon attended elite schools, and Britain and Russia remained defiantly unconquered. So this clearly isn’t a documentary, but a little dramatic license is sometimes necessary to ease the transition to the big screen.

While a prisoner on St. Helena, Napoleon reportedly wanted to escape to America. However, the presence of some 2,000 British soldiers on the island made leaving nearly impossible.

Napoleon’s family had an outsize role in European politics of the 19th century. Although his only son died months after his 21st birthday, Napoleon’s siblings and their children would wield tremendous power in the years of Napoleon’s empire and beyond.
