Siblings arrested after Phoenix police find malnourished, chained-up dogs at their home

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree157

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Two people were arrested for animal cruelty after police discovered multiple dogs living in deplorable conditions while searching for suspects in north Phoenix last month.

On Nov. 16, Phoenix police were in the area of 7th Street and Mountain View Road, just west of Cave Creek Road, for a stolen vehicle call and began chasing the suspects and establishing a perimeter. Officers then checked the backyard of a home in the area while looking for the suspects and saw multiple dogs chained up, in cages, malnourished and living in bad conditions. The police officers gave the dogs some water, and the Humane Society was called to the scene. Police say eight dogs were removed and needed immediate medical attention.

Police say the homeowner, 45-year-old Barry Kee, and his sister, 35-year-old Dandrea Price, were arrested the next day, and both were booked on 56 counts of animal cruelty-related charges.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Phoenix murder suspect sent photos of mutilated body to victim’s family, documents say

Post by Paul Mon 04 Dec 2023, 3:09 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree161

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Police have arrested three men for the brutal murder of a man who was found dead in a Phoenix park late last month. Newly released court documents state that three gang members are allegedly involved in the homicide and were arrested on Sunday. Authorities have identified the suspects in the death of 30-year-old Bernardo Pantaleon as Jose Rodriguez, 20, Leonardo Santiago, and Manual Carrasco-Calderon, both 21 years old.
On Nov. 26, Pantaleon’s body was found with “significant trauma” on a trail near Mountain View Park, near 7th and Peoria avenues. Court paperwork revealed that he had been shot multiple times and that his body was mutilated. Injuries extended from his head into his neck and torso areas. Pantaleon’s family said he was found naked, beaten and brutally tortured, so bad that detectives asked other loved ones not to see him in that condition. Family members believe he was a victim of a targeted hate crime because he was gay.
Days later, on Nov. 30, family members reportedly received two pictures. Documents say one of the photos that had been posted on Instagram showed Panaleon, who was already dead, and a man flipping off the camera. The other reportedly showed the victim’s mutilated body. Detectives were able to identify the social media account, which led them to other messages where the suspected shooter had discussed the murder with someone else and then allegedly went back to mutilate the body after the murder.
In the days that followed, some gang members also reportedly made derogatory statements about Pantaleon’s sexuality and made remarks that homosexuality wasn’t allowed in the “northside” while “cheering” the death on social media.

Thirty-year-old Bernardo Pantaleon’s body was found on a trail near Mountain View Park. His family is worried this attack was a possible hate crime.
All three men reportedly confessed to their involvement in Pantaleon’s death and face one count of first-degree premeditated murder. Santiago is the alleged shooter, who also faces a felony charge of crimes against the dead along with Carrasco-Calderon.
The family has since launched a GoFundMe, which has raised $3,000 as of Monday afternoon. To donate, click/tap here.

Phoenix Police said officers were called to reports of a shooting inside the mobile home park in the area of 43rd Avenue and Roosevelt Street around 3:45 p.m. Officers say they found a car crashed and three teenage male victims, all with gunshot wounds. Family members confirmed to Arizona’s Family that 17-year-old Samuel Farias died, and his cousin, Jacob, remains in the hospital. A friend of the two boys’ was also hurt in the shooting and is still hospitalized.
Joe Farias is Samuel Farias’s uncle, he says Samuel was a student at North Canyon High School in Phoenix and worked at McDonalds. His life ended yesterday in this place, and that is so sad for the whole family.”
The whole family is numb, says Joe. “Devastated - everybody, all the uncles, aunts, cousins, everybody. Mom cant believe she is still waiting for him to come home he is not going to come home no more,” says Joe.
In an update Thursday morning, authorities said detectives are still actively looking to learn more about what led up to the shooting and who shot the teens. So far, officers still haven’t given details on what led up to the crash either. Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS to provide an anonymous tip.

SASABE, SONORA, MEX (3TV/CBS 5) - Dust blows across the streets. A dog occasionally walks from one side of the road to the other. Two things stand out in Sasabe, Sonora: the emptiness and the silence.
Last month, rival smuggling gangs began fighting over this stretch of the Sonoran desert. The residents of Sasabe found themselves caught in the crosshairs.
“They were trapped,” said Gail Kocourek, who is a volunteer with the Tucson Samaritans. It’s an aid group that helped the families who escaped.
“Wouldn’t you run with your family? I would. I would say, ‘I’m not living here when those bullets are flying by and my neighbors are getting killed. And they burned my neighbor’s house out. I’m getting out of here,’” said Kocourek.

Sasabe has always been a “jumping off” point for migrants hoping to cross illegally into the US. Its location north of Altar and between the cities of Nogales to the east and San Luis Rio Colorado to the west draw migrants and smugglers who want to avoid attention near those larger cities. That also makes Sasabe a valuable prize for the gang that controls the area.
Before the fighting started, Sasabe was home to about 2,500 people. Now, only about 20 remain.

Arizona’s Family Investigates is among the first American journalists to venture into Sasabe since the fighting began. We saw bullet holes riddle the walls and windows of abandoned homes and businesses. At least one building appears to have had a fire inside. Some of the homes were barricaded from the inside, with occupants pushing sofas and furniture against the front doors.
Gail Kocourek says many of the residents were eventually able to get humanitarian waivers to enter the US on a temporary basis. But others were killed before they could make it across the border, including one man who did occasional work for the non-profits that help migrants.

“He got shot on the main street, and his friends took him to the border and asked for humanitarian aid, and they said no,” She said. “Within an hour, he was dead.”
The violence is not isolated to Sasabe. Farther south, the towns of Altar, Caborca and Benjamin Hill have all seen flare-ups since the gangs began fighting. Photos and videos posted by Mexican media show rival gang members hanging from light posts – one of them on fire. And example after example of gunfights playing out along major Sonoran highways.

On Sunday night, US Customs and Border Protection closed the border crossing in Lukeville. CBP stated it was meant to free up officers and agents to assist in a recent surge of border crossers. Americans going to or returning from Rocky Point have a choice to travel west through San Luis. That’s considered a relatively safe area. Or they can travel east, through Nogales. That route would send them straight through Caborca and Altar. Territory that is at the heart of the recent gang violence.
Back in Sasabe, our team saw pets roaming the streets, abandoned when their owners fled the violence. And the Mexican National Guard rolled into town in Humvees and pickup trucks, going door to door in an attempt to clear the town of the gang members.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Northern Arizona man charged for inciting religious terror attack in Australia that killed two police officers

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A U.S. citizen has been charged in Arizona over online comments that allegedly incited what police describe as a “religiously motivated terrorist attack” in Australia a year ago in which six people died, officials said Wednesday.
Queensland state police officers Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold and innocent bystander Alan Dare were fatally shot by Gareth Train, his brother Nathaniel Train and Nathanial’s wife Stacey Train in an ambush at the Trains’ remote property in the rural community of Wieambilla last Dec. 12, investigators say.
It is with a heavy heart we confirm the deaths of Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow. Their lives...
Posted by Queensland Police Service on Monday, December 12, 2022

Four officers had arrived at the property to investigate reports of a missing person. They walked into a hail of gunfire, police said at the time. Two officers managed to escape and raise the alarm.
Police killed the three Trains, who have been described as conspiracy theorists, during a six-hour siege.
FBI agents arrested a 58-year-old man near Heber Overgaard, Arizona, last week on a U.S. charge that alleged he incited the violence through comments posted online last December, Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said at a joint news conference in Brisbane with FBI legal attaché for Australia Nitiana Mann. Police did not release the suspect’s name.
He was remanded in custody when he appeared in an Arizona court on Tuesday. He faces a potential five-year prison sentence if convicted.

“We know that the offenders executed a religiously motivated terrorist attack in Queensland,” Scanlon said, referring to the Trains. “They were motivated by a Christian extremist ideology.”
The FBI is still investigating the alleged motive of the American. Queensland police had flown to Arizona to help investigators there.
“The attack involved advanced planning and preparation against law enforcement,” Scanlon said.
Gareth Train began following the suspect on YouTube in May 2020. A year later, they were communicating directly.
“The man repeatedly sent messages containing Christian end-of-days ideology to Gareth and then later to Stacey,” Scanlon said.
Mann said the FBI was committed to assisting the Queensland Police Service in its investigation.
“The FBI has a long memory and an even longer reach. From Queensland, Australia, to the remote corners of Arizona,” Mann said.
“The FBI and QPS worked jointly and endlessly to bring this man to justice, and he will face the crimes he is alleged to have perpetrated,” she added.

MESA, Ariz. (3TV/CBS 5) - Mesa police say two people are dead after a high-speed crash at a major intersection early Wednesday morning.
Officers tell Arizona’s Family that the driver of a Hyundai Elantra was traveling eastbound on Main when they sped through the intersection at Country Club. At that point, the Elantra crashed into a Ford Edge SUV going southbound on Country Club. Video from the scene shows that the Elantra came to rest after colliding with a pole at the southeast corner of the intersection. The driver and passenger of the Elantra died at the scene. While the investigation is still in the early stages, police say they believe the Hyundai was a stolen vehicle and that those in the Ford were an Uber driver and their passengers. The Elantra driver may have also been impaired, police said.
The southbound lanes of Country Club reopened just before 8 a.m., but northbound remains closed. Commuters using light rail will have to use another station to hop on or off, but the light rail is running through the area. Click/tap here for the First Alert Traffic map.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Man arrested months after hit-and-run crash kills teen in north Phoenix

Post by Paul Fri 15 Dec 2023, 7:25 am

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree205

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A Cave Creek man is facing hit-and-run charges, in addition to manslaughter, after allegedly killing a teen boy during an early morning crash in July.
According to court documents, 39-year-old Kyle Nobbley was arrested on Wednesday. Police say he was going westbound on Bell Road near 7th Street when he ran a red light at the intersection, crashing into an SUV. When officers arrived, they found 13-year-old JD Gamino seriously hurt in the back seat of the SUV. Gamino was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries a day later. Investigators believe that Nobbly was going 52mph in a marked 40mph zone at the time of the collision before speeding off, going northbound, and leaving the crash scene.
Throughout the investigation, detectives learned that Nobbley and his parents had realized that a child had been killed in the crash. Authorities say that they believed Nobbley would turn himself in after reaching out to an attorney but then didn’t reach out after talking to his lawyer.
Court paperwork says Nobbley was questioned and didn’t give investigators many details about what happened. Detectives then searched through his parents’ cell phones, which had pictures of the truck in question, which, according to authorities, had been deleted but could be recovered. Call log records also showed attempts to talk to nearby auto body repair facilities, and someone had deleted the Ring doorbell video after the search warrant had been served to Nobbley’s attorney. Nobbley also refused to conduct a DNA test, documents stated.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty North Phoenix community responds to multiple coyote attacks over a two-day span

Post by Paul Fri 15 Dec 2023, 7:45 am

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree212

SEE VIDEO

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — The Arizona Game and Fish Department is searching a north Phoenix neighborhood after three coyote attacks happened this past weekend.
The attacks took place near the Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road. Two men and a 4-year-old child were bitten. All three victims have received medical treatment, gotten rabies treatment and have been released. But Game and Fish is continuing to search for coyotes in a 1 to 2-mile radius near where these attacks took place.
“I figured wildlife would be more distant,” area resident Liz Ingwersen said. Ingwersen grew up in the country, where running into wildlife was common. But she didn’t expect to hear about coyotes attacking just down the street from her north Phoenix home. “I was really surprised first of all,” she said. “But I know it’s a new neighborhood so we’re encroaching on their territories.”
Game and Fish Public Affairs community liaison Alexandra Flickinger says it’s not uncommon for coyotes to be spotted in the Valley. But over the last 26 years, there have only been 28 attacks. So after two happened on Saturday, and a third happened on Sunday, Flickinger says Game and Fish has had crews working 24/7. “We know this is where the bites have occurred,” Flickinger said. “So we’re targeting any of the coyotes that are going to be in this direct vicinity.”
Game and Fish has posted signs in the area, letting people know about the aggressive coyotes. In the meantime, Flickinger says anyone walking their dogs should keep them on a short leash, stay aware of their surroundings, and carry pepper spray. “Think about being out at night when you can’t see very well,” she said. “And just being more cautious is all.”
There’s no timetable on when exactly Game and Fish will stop searching this north Phoenix area for coyotes. But in the meantime, Ingwersen has already altered her daily routine. “At night, I generally take the dogs out just to have them go to the bathroom before they go to bed,” she said. “I don’t do that out front anymore. I just do it in the backyard because I want to make sure they’re safe.”
As for Ingwersen’s safety, she’s taking more precautions. “I have a little tin that I put some coins in so that if the coyote gets close, I can either shake it really loud or maybe even throw it at them just to make them keep their distance if at all needed.”
Anyone who sees a coyote is asked to call the 24/7 Game and Fish hotline at 623-236-7201.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty 17-year-old indicted for murder of teen in San Tan Valley

Post by Paul Sat 16 Dec 2023, 11:08 am

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A 17-year-old will be tried as an adult for the deadly shooting of a teen boy last month in San Tan Valley. On Friday, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office announced that Anthony Jason Garcia was indicted for the murder of Jamiere Jenkins.
“We have seen far too many young lives impacted and cut short due to youth violence,” Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted, and it is my sincere hope that our youth begin to appreciate and recognize the inherent value in every human life.”
On Nov. 28, Jenkins was shot at a park near Parisi Place and Pollino Street, south of Ocotillo Road. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. An Amazon delivery driver reported seeing a blue Dodge Charger driving away after shots were fired, according to court paperwork. Detectives began searching the neighborhood and located the suspect, Garcia, inside a Nissan Maxima with his brother. He was taken into custody, and his brother was interviewed by deputies. However, court documents state Garcia’s brother withheld information from authorities but was later released. During the search, detectives also found a disassembled handgun, a pair of black shoes and a black sweater hidden in an alley.
Two other boys were inside the car with Garcia at the time of the shooting. One boy said an argument broke out between Garcia and Jenkins. As the group was driving away, shots were fired from the vehicle, according to court paperwork. Jenkins was struck in the neck by the gunfire. The witness stated there was a history of “altercations” between the two teens. The second witness contacted Pinal County deputies and reportedly identified Garcia as the shooter.

Garcia declined to speak with deputies without an attorney. He was booked into Pinal County Youth Justice Center for first-degree murder. He was not named previously because of his age, but officials say the case will be tried in adult court.
“This is tragic when you have an altercation, a verbal altercation that results in somebody shooting somebody else. I think it’s cowardly. And clearly we have multiple families that have been, whose lives have been ruined, including one that has lost their child,” Sheriff Lamb said following the shooting.
Jenkins was a junior and football player at Combs High School.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Gov. Hobbs signs executive order deploying National Guard to Arizona’s southern border

Post by Paul Mon 18 Dec 2023, 7:54 am

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree237

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Gov. Katie Hobbs has issued an executive order on Friday afternoon to send the National Guard to Arizona border communities. Officials say the National Guard will assist Department of Public Safety troopers and other law enforcement agencies in southern Arizona.
“Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe,” Hobbs said in a statement. “With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t. But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly and humane border. Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to deliver desperately needed resources to Arizona’s border.”
National Guard members will be stationed at multiple border locations, including Lukeville and the San Miguel crossing. Hobbs’ staff says the Biden Administration has not responded to the governor’s request for border security spending reimbursement.

Per the governor's executive order, the National Guard will assist Department of Public Safety troopers and other law enforcement agencies in southern Arizona.
Hobbs also met with Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño on Friday morning, where both governors vowed to work on reopening the Lukeville port.
Lukeville’s port of entry has been closed for nearly two weeks, causing issues for travelers and businesses in the area. Many travelers are using the San Luis Port of Entry instead, which is causing longer wait times. Some reported waiting more than two hours to cross. Meanwhile, some businesses have opted to close entirely. One employee told Arizona’s Family the shop he works at had more foot traffic during COVID than the ongoing closure.
The Lukeville port has been closed in response to “increased levels of migrant encounters at the Southwest Border,” according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Lukeville lies in the Border Patrol’s Tucson sector, which was the busiest of nine along the U.S.-Mexico border in October. Reports from KOLD, Arizona’s Family sister station in southern Arizona, revealed that a hole was cut into the border fence in Lukeville.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A husband is dead after police say he shot and killed his estranged wife and another man at a business and then shot and killed his teen son before turning the gun on himself in north Phoenix on Monday.
The first shooting happened just 11 a.m. at a business near 27th Avenue and Deer Valley Road, just west of Interstate 17. Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky said the unidentified suspect went into the business and shot his wife and another man. He then drove off. Police said the man died at the scene, while the wife died a short time later at the hospital.
Krynsky said the husband then went to a home near 22nd Avenue and Utopia Road, which is south of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway, close to Deer Valley Park. He shot and killed his son and the family dog before taking his own life, Krynsky said. When police arrived, they were found dead. Even for police officers, that’s nearly more than they can bear. “They’re mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters so obviously there’s that human element they’re always going to have,” Krynsky said.
According to Krynsky, there were some marital issues between the husband and wife, but he didn’t elaborate. He added the husband was the only suspect and there is no threat to the community. An investigation is underway.

The Bezos Academy began offering full-day, tuition-free preschool programs to sites around the country a few years ago after Bezos committed $2 billion to bankroll the project.
The network of "Montessori-inspired" preschools have opened up in Texas, Washington, Florida, and now Arizona. The preschools operate in existing elementary schools or college campuses and are intended to serve areas populated with low-income families.
Each classroom in a Bezos Academy campus enrolls no more than 20 students and all its teachers are licensed in the respective state they work in, according to the organization's website.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Police say one person has died after a fiery crash involving a Phoenix police vehicle on Thursday morning.
According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Rob Scherer, an officer was transporting a prisoner to the Cactus Park Precinct. The officer and another vehicle then collided with each other as the officer was attempting to turn left near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road. After the initial crash, Sgt. Scherer says the other driver lost control and crashed into a light pole and traffic box. The vehicle then caught on fire, and the driver inside died at the scene.
The officer and prisoner were hospitalized with minor injuries, but are expected to be okay. Police did not confirm which vehicle struck the other first. “I don’t know if I can ascertain who hit who, but there was a collision in the middle of the intersection,” said Sgt. Scherer.
Video from the scene appeared to show front-end damage on the patrol vehicle while the other car appeared to have caught on fire and was also hit head-on. Investigators are still working to determine what led up to the crash. The victim’s name hasn’t been released.

At this time, the intersection is closed in all directions and drivers are asked to use alternate routes. For more traffic updates, click or tap here.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty 4 arrests made in connection to shooting death of teen in south Phoenix

Post by Paul Thu 21 Dec 2023, 5:13 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree257

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Police announced late Wednesday that four people, including a minor, have been arrested in connection to a teen who was shot to death in south Phoenix last month.
According to Phoenix Police, detectives arrested 18-year-old Dareon Harris and a teenager on Dec. 14. Four days later, officers arrested Leonard Brown, 19, days later after investigators linked all of the suspects to the teen’s murder. A fourth suspect, identified as 18-year-old Takari Humphrey was arrested on Wednesday. The teen that was arrested will not be named because he’s underage, police say.
On Nov. 28, just before 9 p.m., Phoenix police officers were called to an apartment complex near 7th Avenue and Alta Vista Road, just south of Southern Avenue. 911 callers reported an injured person was in front of a unit and that gunfire was heard in the complex. Officers arrived at the complex’s parking lot and found 17-year-old Marc Leyva on the ground next to a car with bullet holes, arresting documents say. Leyva was rushed to the hospital but later died.
Investigators learned that Leyva borrowed his mother’s car and drove with his friend to pick up Harris and the unidentified teen suspect to go to a liquor store. Returning from the store, as the group was getting out of Leyva’s car, Brown and Humphrey walked up to the group, asking about Leyva’s friends’ shoes and asking what he would do “if someone pointed a gun at him,” court documents said. Harris, Humphrey, Brown and the teen suspect then all began shooting at Leyva and his friend before running away, police say.
In court paperwork, detectives say that Harris and the unidentified teen admitted to having guns with them and planned to rob Leyva when he arrived at the apartment complex. The two suspects also claimed Humphrey was the one who initiated the robbery and fired the first shot toward Leyva, court paperwork states. Police also confirmed the four suspects all knew each other.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Suspect shot man to death during robbery attempt at Phoenix apartment, court docs say

Post by Paul Thu 21 Dec 2023, 5:16 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree258

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5)  A man is facing several charges, including murder, after allegedly forcing his way into a Phoenix apartment and shooting a man who had been sleeping. Henry Celaya, 46, is jailed in connection with the death of 29-year-old David Cordova.
Just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Phoenix police responded to reports of an injured man at an apartment complex near 31st Avenue and Washington Street. Officers found Cordova, who had been shot, and he died a short time later at a hospital.
According to court documents, a witness identified the suspect as someone she knew named Henry Celaya. She reportedly told police someone was banging on the door and when she answered, Celaya pushed her to the side. She said Celaya went into the living room where Cordova was sleeping, then hit him in the face and grabbed his necklace. The suspect reportedly yelled at Cordova to “give me everything” while searching his pockets.
The witness said Celaya repeated for Cordova to give him everything, then allegedly placed a handgun on his chest and fired one shot. He then ran from the apartment.
A short time later, another witness said Celaya banged on her front door and pushed his way into her apartment, telling her that “he just smoked someone.” She reportedly told him to leave, and she lost sight of him after he jumped a wall. Officers later recovered a handgun under a nearby trash can.
Around the same time, police received information that Celaya was possibly hiding in a car outside his mother’s home on 33rd Avenue, less than a half mile from the shooting scene. Tactical units responded to the area, and Celaya was arrested around 10 a.m. Officers also seized a bag that Celaya dropped on the trunk of a car before he was taken into custody, which later tested positive for methamphetamine.
Court documents say Celaya refused to answer detectives’ questions, but one of the witnesses positively identified him as the suspect in the shooting. He was booked into the Maricopa County jail for first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery, misconduct involving weapons by a prohibited possessor, discharging a firearm within city limits and drug possession. Documents also say he had two felony warrants for probation violation from previous drug possession convictions.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Rep. Athena Salman resigning from Arizona Legislature to join abortion rights group

Post by Paul Thu 21 Dec 2023, 5:20 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree259

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — State Rep. Athena Salman plans to resign from the Arizona Legislature by the end of December to become the director of Arizona campaigns for the state chapter of Reproductive Freedom for All. She announced her decision on social media on Wednesday morning.
“The right to decide if, when and how to start and grow your family faces the largest threat in generations,” Salman said in a statement announcing her resignation. “We are one bad court decision away from a 160-year-old total ban on abortion being reinstated in Arizona.”
Salman, a Democrat, was elected to the Arizona House in 2016 and represents District 8, which largely includes Tempe. She’s also the first elected official in Arizona to be of Palestinian descent. As CRFA’s newest director, Salaman says the organization plans to “mobilize 75,000 members across the state to enshrine” access to abortion as a fundamental right in Arizona’s constitution.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to be an authentic and compassionate leader for my community in the Arizona Legislature,” she said. “I am forever grateful to my constituents and supporters for your support, and deeply appreciate the love and encouragement of my friends and family. Together, we will make history.”

Salman is not the first Democrat to resign from the Arizona House this year. In July, House Minority Leader Andrés Cano resigned after being accepted at Harvard to pursue a master’s degree in public administration.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Phoenix Police: Motorcyclist dies after crashing into SUV that pulled out in front of him

Post by Paul Thu 21 Dec 2023, 5:22 pm

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - A man is dead after police say he was riding his motorcycle and crashed into an SUV that suddenly pulled out in front of him in southwest Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., Phoenix police were called to a crash near 75th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. Officers arrived and found the motorcyclist, 25-year-old Ricardo Fonesca, critically injured. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Detectives say the Fonseca was riding his motorcycle heading west on Lower Buckeye Road when an SUV pulled out of a private driveway. According to police, Fonesca could not stop his motorcycle and crashed into the SUV. The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene, and police say she showed no signs of impairment.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Ex-Maricopa Co. prosecutor who falsely charged protestors gets law license suspended

Post by Paul Thu 21 Dec 2023, 5:24 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree261

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Former Maricopa County prosecutor April Sponsel has been suspended from practicing law for two years after she was fired for falsely submitting street gang charges on a group of protestors in downtown Phoenix back in 2020.
The State Bar of Arizona confirmed her punishment on Tuesday. In the sentencing letter, the judge explained Sponsel’s actions had “far-reaching” and “deleterious consequences.” Her suspension goes into effect in 60 days, in the middle of February.
The disgraced deputy county attorney was fired in 2022 after the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office noted several job violations. At the time, MCAO officials said Sponsel showed incompetency, inefficiency, and neglect of duty in performing her job. Chief Deputy Paul Ahler noted “a disturbing pattern of excessive charging and a failure to review available evidence.”
The investigation all stemmed from an incident in Oct. 2020 where Phoenix police officers believed that a group of protestors was trying to block a light-rail train. At the time, police said some of the protestors in the group were carrying weapons like an AR-15, a pistol, a stun gun, a metal club, a brick, a knife, and smoke bombs. Court documents detailed that when the group ignored police commands to clear the street, a police lieutenant at the scene ordered the arrest of 15 protestors.
After the protestors’ arrest, Sponsel and veteran detective Karl Martin met with several law enforcement officials to discuss the possibility of charging the protestors with “assisting a criminal street gang.” Sponsel, who filed the indictment about a week later, was accused by a retired judge investigating the handling of the charges of working too closely with the police and misrepresenting evidence to the grand jury.
On Aug. 19, 2021, then-Phoenix City Manager Ed Zuercher released a report conducted by an independent investigation of the Phoenix Police Department in regard to the false charges made against the protesters. The report resulted in then-Police Chief Jeri Williams demoting three of her executive team — John Collins, Lawrence Hein and Gabriel Lopez — and placing Doug McBride, the officer at the center of the report, on administrative leave.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Flights into Phoenix Sky Harbor have been stopped Sunday morning due to dense fog. The Federal Aviation Administration declared a ground stop around 7:50 a.m. for planned arrivals to Sky Harbor from Southern California.
The FAA estimates lifting the ground stop around 10:15 a.m. but says there’s a 30% to 60% chance the ground stop will be extended. As of 9:15 a.m., more than 100 flights are either delayed or canceled as a result of the weather conditions and other factors.
The agency may lift and issue ground stops for flights into Phoenix throughout the morning, depending on the density of the fog.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Mom arrested after young daughter found dead in dumpster behind Phoenix business

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A woman is in jail facing a murder charge after her young daughter was found dead in a dumpster behind a business in Phoenix on Christmas Eve. The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Sophia Simmons.
GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: Discretion is advised.
Around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Phoenix police responded to the area of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road after someone reported finding a body in a dumpster. According to court documents, officers arrived to find the body of a young girl inside a plastic tote. An investigator with the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner pulled the tote from the dumpster and found that the girl, who appeared to be about 5 to 7 years old, had multiple injuries on her body — including her arms, legs and torso. Some wounds were reportedly recent, while others were in multiple stages of healing, including scars.
On Monday, someone in New York called Phoenix police to report receiving a phone call from Simmons. The caller reported that Simmons said she had beaten her daughter and that “it went too far.” According to documents, Simmons told the person she left her house after beating the child and that when she returned, the girl wasn’t breathing. After CPR was unsuccessful, Simmons reportedly kept the girl’s body at the house for five days before going to a dumpster about 4 miles away.
Police conducted surveillance on Simmons’ townhome and saw signs that someone had been attempting to clean a crime scene. Documents say the front door was open and that a smoke alarm could be heard going off inside. There was furniture outside, and a garden hose was going through the front door. Detectives obtained a search warrant and found standing water throughout the townhome and noted that cushions were missing from the couch. No one was home.
Investigators also reviewed surveillance video from a neighbor. Officers also obtained a warrant for Simmons’ cellphone and found the device was moving toward Arizona from California. Simmons was later stopped and arrested near I-10 in Tonopah. Records also showed that Simmons’ phone was in the area of the dumpster on the morning of Dec. 24.
Police say Simmons refused to speak without a lawyer and was booked on several felony charges, including first-degree murder, child abuse and tampering with evidence. During her initial court appearance, a prosecutor pointed out that Simmons has at least one previous conviction in Minnesota for “malicious punishment of a child.”
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are awaiting specific information on the girl’s death from the medical examiner’s office.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Phoenix man arrested after allegedly pointing laser at passenger jet, police helicopter

Post by Paul Tue 26 Dec 2023, 6:15 pm

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Scree281

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5)  Phoenix police say a man was arrested Thursday evening for shining a laser pointer at a passenger jet and a police helicopter. He’s been identified as 35-year-old William Hill.
A Phoenix PD helicopter responded to a neighborhood near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road around 8:30 p.m. after the crew of a Southwest flight reported a laser strike as the plane was making its final descent into Sky Harbor. As the police helicopter arrived, a green laser was reportedly pointed at the front of the cockpit. The crew tracked the origin of the laser beam to a house on Indianola Avenue and saw two men standing in the backyard.
Officers arrived moments later and found three men standing in the driveway. According to court documents, when asked about the incident, two residents said Hill “has lots of gadgets,” including a green laser he uses to play with cats.
Police then spoke with Hill, who first said no one had a laser. After being detained, documents say Hill admitted to owning a green laser and that he was using it in the backyard, “testing out how powerful it was.” He said he was not trying to point it at planes or helicopters. Officers later recovered a laser from the home, and Hill was booked into the Maricopa County jail on two felony counts of aiming a laser pointer at an occupied aircraft.
The FAA confirmed an investigation is underway and released a statement about another laser strike near Sky Harbor later that night.

“The flight crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 1672 reported being illuminated by a green laser near Phoenix, Arizona, around 11:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, Dec. 21. Local authorities were notified. The FAA will investigate.
Pilots reported 9,500 laser strikes to the FAA in 2022. Two hundred and seventy-eight pilots have reported an injury from a laser strike to the FAA since 2010. People who shine lasers at aircraft face FAA fines of up to $11,000 per violation and up to $30,800 for multiple laser incidents. The FAA issued $120,000 in fines for laser strikes in 2021.”
FAA

Data from the FAA (see chart below) shows 482 laser incidents have been reported in Arizona. Earlier this year, the FAA investigated after two commercial aircraft were hit by lasers in Phoenix on Super Bowl Sunday. Here’s how to report laser strikes.

It’s unclear if Phoenix police have identified a suspect in the second incident.
Editor’s note: The FAA initially reported the only laser strike in Phoenix Thursday night involved Delta flight 1652. Hill is not connected to that investigation since he was already in custody at that time.

IN THE LOCAL NEWS...3 Empty Here is what has happened in the Preston Lord homicide investigation in the last two months

Post by Paul Fri 29 Dec 2023, 1:53 pm

Here is what has happened in the Preston Lord homicide investigation in the last two months
Preston Lord was assaulted at a large Halloween party in Queen Creek on Oct. 28. He died two days later.

OCT. 28Preston Lord dies after being assaulted at Halloween party

It was Oct. 28, three days before Halloween, when Preston Lord attended a party in a Queen Creek neighborhood. The party was large, around 100 to 200 teens attended. Neighbors said they called police several times that evening because of the gathering.

"We had students falling out of cars. We had kids vomiting in our front yard here. We were trying to take care of teenagers with open alcohol... sick," Jeanna Pignatiello, who lives nearby, said.

Police said they first received a call about a disturbance around 9 p.m. that Saturday. Officers said a number of teens were leaving the area. They didn't see any illegal activity, so they left.

Police said they responded to a second call about 40 minutes later and that's when they found a teen, later identified as Lord, lying in the road near 194th Street and Via Del Rancho Road.

First responders performed CPR and took Lord to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Pignatiello told 12News she believes the party could have been stopped before someone lost their life.

"I can't imagine as a parent what that feels like but to know we were calling for an hour at least, maybe two," Pignatiello said. "Where were the police? Where were the adults? How did this get to continue? How was this so out of control?"

Two days after being assaulted, Lord died of his injuries. Family said Lord had a severe brain injury.

Queen Creek police classified Lord's death as a homicide.

Lord went to Combs High School in San Tan Valley. The school hosted a candlelight vigil on Nov. 9 for Lord. Hundreds of community members, friends and family gathered around the school's candlelit courtyard, listening to family and friends of Lord reflect on his life and legacy.

He was described as a positive light in the community.

“I feel like I’m missing a part of myself," said friend Andrew Vasquez.

“Preston was one of the happiest souls I’ve ever met," said friend Andres Zavala.

“I miss you Preston. I hope you know how much I’m thankful for you," said friend Merrick Bowles.

One mother read a letter on behalf of her son, Fabian Moreno, who was Lord's friend. She fought back tears.

“I lost my father. But this type of pain hurts. To see my son go through this hurts," she said.

NOV. 9Queen Creek PD serves search warrants in investigation

That same day, Queen Creek police announced they had served several search warrants related to Lord's death, but that no arrests had been made.

"We understand that the community wants quick resolution – as a police department, we are committed to a thorough investigation to hold the appropriate people accountable and bring justice to the family," a statement from the Queen Creek Police Department said.

NOV. 14Multiple 'persons of interest.' FBI joins investigation

On Nov. 14, the Queen Creek Police Department said they had identified multiple persons of interest in the homicide investigation, but still had not made any arrests.

Police said they received hundreds of tips since the assault and were in the process of reviewing a "substantial amount" of data before making an arrest.

"Our Investigators are determined and dedicated to solving this case," Police Chief Randy Brice said in a statement. "However, we want more than just an arrest. We want to ensure that those involved are convicted of the crime."

The FBI was also brought in to help with the case and agents were working with police to offer a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

NOV. 26-28Several teens die in violent East Valley situations

On Nov. 26, 17-year-old Casa Grande Union High School senior died after being shot at a house party in Casa Grande.

Casa Grande police said an altercation between an unknown number of party attendees took place and resulted in shots being fired. Hailey Stephens and another 17-year-old girl were hit. Both were victims of stray bullets, police said.

The shooting was not related to the Lord investigation, but enhanced worries for community members about teen violence in the East Valley.

A total of nine teenagers were arrested in connection with the house party and shooting.

Two days after the Casa Grande house party shooting, another teen was shot and killed in San Tan Valley.

Jamiere Jenkins went to the same high school as Preston Lord.

Jenkins was shot after a verbal confrontation with another teen, according to officials.

Anthony J. Garcia, the suspect accused of shooting Jenkins, was charged with one count of second-degree murder. Garcia is not being prosecuted in juvenile court.

Jenkins case has not been linked to any others mentioned, but again, another teen was killed by violence in the east Valley, furthering concerns from the community.

NOV. 29Community holds walk for justice one month after Lord's death

One month after the assault on Lord and after no arrests had been made, hundreds in the East Valley spent the somber anniversary together by walking from American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek to the Queen Creek Police Department. Participants wore orange, Lord's favorite color.

“It’s been a month since our family got a call that would change our lives forever," said Melissa Lord, Preston's aunt.

“It’s also been a month since a group of boys decided to beat my nephew and leave him on the side of the road and go home like nothing happened," Melissa Lord said. “It’s been a month since the parents of these boys have chosen to live a life of silence while we’ve been living a real-life nightmare.”

Lord's death has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community.

“I think everyone feels the same. We’re just heartbroken and devastated but also trying to come together to support not only the family but the safety of all of our youth, said Katey McPherson.

DEC. 21Parents refuse to let children cooperate in investigation

On Dec. 21, Queen Creek's police chief, Randy Brice, provided an update on the investigation.

"I understand that it is incredibly frustrating for the public that there has not yet been an arrest. To secure a conviction, the County Attorney must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt - social media posts are not enough - they must be authenticated and corroborated," Brice said in a statement.

Queen Creek PD has conducted numerous interviews and issued several search warrants.

Brice, however, said not everyone is cooperating.

"I want to thank those parents and children that have come forward to provide information or details related to this case. However, some parents have actively refused to let their children participate in the investigation. We need people to come forward and stand up for Preston," Brice said.

Brice said police have increased patrols in areas where teens are known to congregate as the community waits for arrests.

DEC. 22Gilbert PD reopens teen assault cases

The Gilbert Police Department reopened four criminal cases involving teen assaults in the wake of Preston Lord's death in Queen Creek.

Lord's death brought several other East Valley assaults to light where groups of suspects have ganged up on one victim and beat them up. Many of the assaults are recorded, often by the suspects, and shared on social media.

Videos of some of these incidents have been circulating among East Valley community groups.

One of the groups linked to some of the incidents is known as the "Gilbert Goons."

A Gilbert PD spokesperson told 12News initially, they did not have any cases where the victims or suspects referred to the "Gilbert Goons", however recent updates from victims now refer to their assailants as being associated with the group.

"We are actively reviewing our assault cases involving youth to see if there is any additional information or correlation between these incidents that can assist us with our past investigations," said Brenda Carrasco, a public information officer with Gilbert PD.

DEC. 28Queen Creek police submit charges for review against 7 people connected to Lord's death

Exactly two months after the deadly assault, the Queen Creek Police Department said they are referring charges against seven people to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in connection with the death of Lord.

"While charges have been submitted for review, the investigation continues and the public is encouraged to submit any new tips," Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice said Thursday.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said it would "likely take some time" to review those charges.
