Cher is an American singer, television and movie actress. She is known for her distinctive singing voice and fashion. She has been honored and won many awards in her career. Cher is now 74 and has been in the industry for about 57 years. She is known as the "Goddess of Pop." She has sold 100 million records so far and continues to sing and tour. 

Cher in "Mermaids"

Cher acted in the movie Mermaids. She starred as Mrs. Flax, a mom with two daughters. The movie's plot is a teenage girl who moves with her mother and young sister to a small town in Massachusetts. Cher was forty-four when she acted in this movie in 1990.

Cher plays a quirky, unforgettable single mother. The Movie did not become a hit, but Cher stated that she enjoyed her role in the movie. She said her character is a lot like her mother was. She stated she would rather do a movie for half of the money but be proud of it. Cher won a Yoga Award for her role in this movie. 

Barbie Cher

The Cher celebrity doll was made by Mego in 1976. There were three versions made, a full line of Mackie clothes, home and stage playsets, and a Sonny Bono doll. Bob Mackie designed this particular doll's lavender gown.

The doll features the long black silky hair as Cher had. Mego held a 1,000 guest dinner dance to launch the Cher dolls, and the doll was the number one selling doll in 1976. There were multiple versions and outfits sold at the time.

The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour

"The Sonny and Cher Show" was an American Variety show starring Sonny Bono and Cher. The two were married, and both were pop singers. The show premiered in August 1971 and ran until May 1974. The show was canceled because of Sonny and Cher divorcing. The show was supposed to be a summer replacement series, but it earned a permanent spot because of high ratings.

On every episode, the couple would come out and exchange banter and sing songs. At the end of every show, they would sing their hit, "I Got You, Babe." They also had guests on the show, and often their daughter Chastity would join them on stage.

Sonny & Cher

Sonny Bono and Cher met in 1963 when Cher was just sixteen. Sonny was twenty-seven and married at the time. Cher was Sonny's housekeeper, and then he invited her to live with him because he needed a roommate. "It wasn't a fiery, sexy thing with us, but rather paternal, like we were bound together, two people who needed each other, almost for protection." ------ Cher.

The couple started singing together and eventually started "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour." The two got married in 1969 and had a daughter, Chastity, in 1969. Their first huge hit together was "I Got You, Babe."

Gregg Allman and Cher

Cher and Gregg Allman met at a concert when she was on a date with David Geffen. Cher gave him her number, and he called her the next day. Gregg had a serious drug problem and passed out after shooting heroin on their first date. Three days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalized, Cher and Gregg flew to Vegas and got married.

Nine days later, Cher filed to dissolve the marriage because of Allman's horrible drug and alcohol abuse. They reconciled a month later after Allman got his act together, and even though their relationship was still rocky, they stayed together because Cher became pregnant. They had a son, Elijah Blue, in July 1976. The couple was officially divorced in January 1979.

The Witches Of Eastwick

Cher was cast in The Witches of Eastwick alongside Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon. The movie was made in 1987 and is about three friends feeling unfulfilled until a stranger comes and courts them. He tells them they are witches, and they begin learning about their powers but worry about the man's intentions.

They tried to tell Cher she was too old for the role, but she told them otherwise, and they cast her. The movie received positive reviews, and there were many awards won for the movie; however, Cher did not win an award for this movie.

Cher Show

The "Cher Show" was a television variety show starring Cher. The show premiered in 1975 and featured many famous musical guests. Cher performed her songs and sketches. The show only lasted for one season and was canceled. Cher stated that doing the show on her own was overwhelming.

Cher and Sonny set aside their differences and reunited for "The Sonny & Cher Show," which replaced the "Cher show." "The Sonny & Cher Show" lasted 1 1/2 seasons. After that show was canceled, Cher continued with her music career.

Moonstruck

Cher starred in Moonstruck in 1987. Moonstruck was the fifth-highest-grossing film in the US that year, and the film was nominated for six Oscars. Cher won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Cher was forty years old when she starred in Moonstruck.

Cher played Loretta Castorini, a widow living with her Sicilian family in Brooklyn. Cher didn't really think the movie would be successful. Cher only had one week after finishing filming Moonstruck before she began filming another movie.

Silkwood

Silkwood was an American movie released in 1983. Cher starred alongside Mike Nichols, Meryl Streep, and Kurt Russell. Cher plays Dolly Pelliker, who lives, works, and is close friends with Karen Silkwood. Cher won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

This movie was the first serious role for Cher. Silkwood received positive reviews, was a hit at the box office, and received five nominations at the 56th Academy Awards.

Cher & Gregg Allman's Son

Elijah Blue Allman was born on July 10, 1976, to Cher and Greg Allman. Elijah didn't have much of a relationship with his father. He was sent to boarding school at eight years old and has always felt abandoned by Cher for being sent away.

Cher and Elijah did not have a close relationship; when Elijah got married, Cher was not invited. Elijah is a musician but hasn't really gone very far with his career. Chastity and Elijah were close when they were kids, but now they don't have much of a relationship.

Las Vegas Residency

The Classic Cher residency in Las Vegas is Cher's third concert residency. The residency was in Las Vegas at the Park MGM. She performed 104 shows from 2017 to 2020. She opened the show with "Woman's World" and then sang all of her hits.

She did not disappoint fans; her fashion was stunning and surprising as always. She had mostly great reviews from her residency, saying she performed great and put on an amazing show. The other residencies she had were Dressed to Kill, and Here We Go Again. 

Burlesque

Burlesque was released in 2010 and is a musical film written and directed by Steven Antin. Cher starred alongside Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, and Kristen bell. Cher was sixty-four years old when she made this movie, and she contributed to the soundtrack for the movie as well.

Cher played Tess Scali and claimed she took the role because she was begged to. She ended up really enjoying making this movie. The film was nominated twice at the Grammy Awards, and it grossed about $91 million.

Sonny & Cher's Daughter

Sonny Bono and Cher had a daughter named Chastity on March 4, 1969. She was Sonny and Cher's only child. She appeared on their variety show, "Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour," often. Chastity grew up under the spotlight and went on the road with Cher.

When Sonny turned to politics, his relationship with his daughter became strained. Chastity was never interested in fashion or talking to boys. She knew she wasn't a normal girl, but it wasn't until later in life that she understood it all.

Cher Transgender Daughter

Cher's daughter Chastity found out she was transgender and wanted to be a man. He became Chaz and stated that he always felt different and out of his skin as a girl. She knew she liked girls at the age of thirteen but didn't come out to her parents until eighteen. In 2008, Chastity began the transition to becoming a man and legally changed her name to Chaz.

He admits when it comes to finding love, he doesn't understand women. Even as a girl, Chaz always felt like a man. Chaz really struggled with his father's unexpected death; he went through some years of substance abuse but cleaned up, lost weight, and has even found love.

Oscars

Cher's Oscar looks are in a league of their own. Cher has attended the Oscars in five different decades. Cher went to her first Oscars in 1968 with Sonny Bono and wore a pink and metallic satin gown. In 1973, Cher went to the Oscars with Sonny Bono and wore a gold, jewel-encrusted dress. Cher attended the 1983 Oscars in a long-sleeve, full-length see-through gown.

Cher went to the Oscars in 1984 with Val Kilmer and wore a sparkling, naked dress and dangling diamond earrings. Then in 1986, she wore the black headpiece and black jewel-encrusted, two-piece, and belly-baring dress. In 1988, she won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck. She showed up in a jewel-encrusted naked dress with a sparkling fringe bra and matching shawl. She attended many Oscar Award Shows and never disappointed with her fashion.

Mask

Cher starred in the movie Mask in 1985. Cher played the mother, Rusty, of a teenage boy suffering from a facial deformity. She fights for his acceptance in the public school system. Cher received a Golden Globe Nomination for her work in this film, and she received the 1985 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress.

The movie reviews were mostly positive, and the film received the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. This movie was based on a true story. Cher stated she doesn't think a script will ever move her as much as this one.

Billboard Icon Award

Cher received the 2017 Billboard Icon Award at seventy-one years old. She also sang her biggest hit, "Believe," it was her first performance at an awards show in over fifteen years. Cher had more than 100 million albums sold and a number one hit every decade since the 1960s.

She was also the first artist to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each decade. She stated in her speech that she wanted to do what she does since she was four-years-old. She was presented the award by Gwen Stefani.

THE ENDING OF SONNY & CHER

Both Sonny and Cher's careers were taking off, but their relationship was in trouble. Sonny wasn't faithful to Cher, and according to her, was controlling, but not in an abusive way. In 1972, Cher told Sonny that she was involved with a member of their band. They didn't divorce because of their careers being tied up in Sonny & Cher. They stay married but found different partners.

To the public, they were still happily married. Sonny finally filed for divorce in 1974, and Cher discovered that Cher Enterprises was 95% Sonny's. They agreed on an arrangement, and their divorce was finalized on June 26, 1975. The couple did come back together again to do "The Sonny and Cher Show," but the show didn't last. 

Gregg Allman's Funeral

Gregg Allman was Cher's second husband, and they shared a son, Elijah Allman. Gregg Allman had years of drug and alcohol abuse and later had Hepatitis C that ruined his liver. He had a liver transplant but would later get liver cancer that spread to his lungs.

Gregg Allman passed away with his wife and best friend by his side with soft jazz playing, as he had requested. Cher attended her ex-husband's funeral on June 3, 2017. She posted on Twitter, honoring her ex-husband, Gregg Allman

Sonny Bono's Funeral

Sonny Bono, Cher's ex-husband and father to their child died in a tragic skiing accident on January 5, 1998. He was on vacation with his family in South Lake Tahoe, California. Sonny was sixty-two when he skied into a wooded area and hit a tree.

The cause of death was massive head injuries. Cher and Sonny were married from 1969 to 1975. Cher spoke at his funeral and stated that Sonny was and will always be her person. Cher and their daughter Chastity took his death really hard.

"Goddess of Pop"

The legendary Cher has been in the entertainment business longer than anybody out there, and she is still going. She came from a very poor family and has had to work hard for everything she has today. Cher has also endorsed products like a skincare line.

Cher started as a backup singer without a penny to her name and rose to the "Goddess of Pop." Today Cher is worth somewhere from $305-360 million. She has the highest-charting solo album in the industry. Cher is and will always be a legend.

Mamma Mia

Cher starred in the movie Mamma Mia and played Ruby Sheridan, Donna's mother. Cher was seventy-two when she made the movie. Cher stated she was frightened to join Mamma Mia's stellar cast; she felt they were already a family following the first movie in 2008.

Cher said she was thrilled to play Meryl Streep's mother in the movie. The pair were reunited after starring in the movie Silkwood in 1983. The movie was a huge hit and grossed $393 million.

Cher and Gene Simmons

Cher began dating Gene Simmons in 1978 and lasted several years. They both admitted their union wasn't monogamous, but she called it the best relationship she ever had. Simmons called Cher his first love. The couple lived together.

Simmons ended up falling for Cher's friend Diana Ross, causing Simmons and Cher's breakup. He said that he fell in love with Ross while Christmas shopping for Cher. Simmons and Cher remained close, and her friendship with Ross continued as well.

Kennedy Center Honors Cher

In 2008, Cher was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors. Whoopi Goldberg gave a hilarious tribute to Cher, Cyndi Lauper performed "If I Could Turn Back Time," and Adam Lambert sang Cher's song, "Believe." Cher was very overwhelmed with all the tributes to her.

Little Big Town opened Cher's segment with a medley of "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves." Cher could be seen wiping tears after Adam Lamberts tribute. Amanda Seyfried also spoke about meeting Cher for the first time on the set of Mamma Mia.

Here We Go Again Tour

The Here We Go Again Tour was Cher's seventh solo concert tour. This tour was her first tour since 2005. At the beginning of the concert, a large curtain was set up with a video montage of Cher's career projected onto it. She then comes out in a purple toga and a blue wig and sings "Woman's World."

At one point, she comes on stage on a mechanical elephant. She also sings "I Got You Babe" with Bono on a large screen singing. Her encore performance was "Believe." This tour was the third top-grossing female touring artist and was nominated for a People's Choice Award.

Cher's Mother, Georgia Holt

Georgia Holt, Cher's mom, was a singer-songwriter, actress, and model. Georgie has been married five times; she married Cher's dad twice. She also has another daughter, the stepsister of Cher. Georgia was a singer and was an actress on several minor television and film roles in the 1950s.

She also appeared on the game show Card Sharks. She appeared on "I Love Lucy" and "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet." Georgia's husband, Gilbert Hartmann, legally adopted Cher and Georganne.

Cher and Elvis

Cher let her nerves get the best of her with Elvis. Elvis Presley invited Cher to spend the weekend with him, but she didn't. She said she was too nervous, but she wishes that she had met with him. She stated her only regrets were not being with Elvis and Marlon Brando.

She has also said that of all the suitors that came her way, the King of Rock n' Roll was definitely the one that got away. She was married very young to Sonny Bono, so the dating scene was new to her.

Cherilyn Sarkisian (Cher)

Cherilyn Sarkisian (Cher) was born on May 20, 1946, in California. She was raised by her mother, Georgia, and grew up with her half-sister Georganne. The family struggled financially, and at one point, Cher was placed in an orphanage while her mother looked for work; she couldn't take care of her children.

Her father was absent from her life; in fact, she didn't actually meet her dad until she was eleven. Her mother married six times. Cher was always interested in music and theatre. Her mother was a singer, actress, and model. Cher said she knew at four that she wanted to be in the industry.

Cher & Fashion

Cher transformed fashion. She became one of the most influential style icons in Red Carpet History and constantly made the headlines for her fashion choices. She is known as the original red carpet renegade. The feather and crystal-encrusted gown she wore to the 1974 Met Gala is one of the most recreated and monumental looks of all time.

Farewell Tour

The Farewell Tour is the name of Cher's third live music video. It was released in 2003, and it contained a live video of a concert from her Living Proof Tour. It was originally aired as a television special on NBC with almost seventeen million viewers.

Cher received an Emmy award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. The video also received 3x Platinum in the US, 8x Platinum in Australia, and Platinum in the UK. The Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was from June 2002 to 2005. Cher performed 325 shows total worldwide.

West Side Story

Cher did a West Side Story medley in her television special named Cher.....Special. Cher plays all of the roles. The show also featured Dolly Parton, Rod Stewart, and The Tubes. For fifteen minutes, Cher sings and dances to a medley of songs from the West Side Story, playing both male and female characters.

Cher's Modeling Career

At twenty-one, Cher became one of Avedon's muses, appearing on the cover of Vogue five times. It was her unique long raven locks, tall frame, and popularity that attracted the attention of iconic fashion magazine Vogue.

"Dear Mom, Love Cher"

Dear Mom, Love Cher was a documentary that Cher made about her mom, Georgia Holt. The film recounts Cher's family history and shows interviews with Cher, Georganne LaPiere, Chaz Bono, and Elijah Blue Allman. The film was released on May 6, 2013, on Lifetime.

The documentary won the Women's Image Network Award for Outstanding Show Produced by a Woman - Cher. The film also features a never-before-heard duet performance with Cher and Georgie and recordings from Georgia's past. It also included unprecedented access to the family.

Cher and Cosmetic Surgery Through the Years

Cher has been open and honest about going under the knife. Cher has stated that she had breast implants, a nose job, a facelift, and dental surgery in the past. She doesn't just rely on cosmetic procedures, though. She stated she puts in a lot of effort, making sure she stays healthy as well.

She doesn't do drugs, drink, watch tv, and eats healthy. She calls herself the 'poster girl for plastic surgery.' She said it makes her happy. Cher has always been very upfront on her looks.

Pioneering Auto-Tuning

Cher's song, "Believe," changed the way modern music is made. Over twenty years ago, Cher released the song with her voice being robotized or Auto-Tuned. "Believe" was the first song to introduce Auto-Tune to the mainstream.

It was unheard of to use this when Cher did, but her song went number one in seventeen countries. Cher liked that at the beginning of the song, you couldn't tell it was her. Since then, many artists have used Auto-Tune in their music. It is just another thing that Cher pioneered.

Dropped out of high school/Dyslexia

Cher suffered from Dyslexia and dropped out of high school at sixteen. She struggled with reading all through grade school and didn't find out until she was thirty that she had dyslexia. Many of Cher's teachers just thought she wasn't trying in school, and her grades suffered.

By 11th grade, it was challenging, so Cher dropped out and met Sonny Bono. Cher has said that she reads her scripts slowly at first and has no problem memorizing them. She also had dyscalculia, which is struggling to make sense of numbers. She is now an advocate for kids with learning and thinking differences.

Billboard Record-Holder

Cher won three Billboard Awards in 1999, Female Hot 100 Artist of the Year, Hot 100 Single of the Year (Believe), and Top Female Artist. In 2002, she won the Billboard Artist Achievement Award and Dance/Club Play Artist of the Year.

Super Bowl XXXIII

Cher said she wasn't nervous before her performance and that if you are too nervous, it ends up being an out-of-body experience. Cher wanted to take every second in and enjoy the performance. Her performance ranks as one of the top performances of the National Anthem.

Georganne Lapiere, Half Sister

Georganne Lapiere is Cher's half-sister. She was a one-time star on the daytime soap "General Hospital." She is five years younger than Cher, and they have different dads. Cher and her sister have always been close, and Cher helped to raise Georganne.

Georganne met her husband through Cher and has had many experiences from being sisters with Cher. Georganne and Cher put together the Documentary, Dear Mom, Love Cher, of their mother's life and ultimately their life. Georganne is also very close to Chaz and Elijah.

Free the Wild

Cher has a charitable foundation called Free the Wild. The foundation was formed to help protect wild animals in captivity. The latest animal her foundation saved is Kaavan, the lonely elephant from Marghzar Zoo. Cher raised enough money to have the elephant transferred to a wildlife sanctuary.

Kaavan lived for three years being chained and living in deplorable conditions at the zoo. Because of Cher and her foundation, Kaavan was moved to the sanctuary and is living in much better conditions. Cher even sang to the elephant before he was transferred.

Cher's Lifestyle

Cher was married very young, at sixteen, and with Sonny Bono for eleven years. She said he took care of her and pretty much took care of everything. She tried drugs but didn't like how they made her feel, smoked for a while but quit, and doesn't drink alcohol very often. She said she has been with many men, but everyone else was way more promiscuous than she ever was.

She was a young mother and had a hectic career. She had said that when she was married to Sonny, they would go home after taping their show and were a normal family, she would make dinner, and it was very low key. Both of her children have said there were always many parties growing up, but Cher was never the wild party girl.

Cher and Val Kilmer

Cher and Val Kilmer met at a Moodstruck party. Cher has said that her relationship with Val came the closest to working. She stated Val was sensitive and artistic and a great kisser. They dated from 1982 until 1984. They always stayed close and there for each other.

Val lived in Cher's guest house when he was fighting throat cancer. He had some scary times while battling cancer and Cher was always there for him. They continue to be very close friends. Val beat cancer but has trouble speaking now.

Come Back to the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean

The movie Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was made in 1982. Cher played Sissy, a wisecracking waitress. The film received good reviews from the critics. The film addressed the subject of feminism.

Cher has always considered it her best work in a film. Cher starred alongside Kathy Bates, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, Marta Heflin, and Sudie Bond. The movie takes after the play of the same name and is a comedy-drama film.

Cher and Madonna

Cher and Madonna have a relationship that is very up and down. Cher was interviewed years ago and asked about Madonna. She said she doesn't like her and that she's rude to everyone. Cher has said in interviews that she doesn't think Madonna can sing well and that she is ugly.

Eventually, the two made up and are now good with each other. Cher has even gone on social media and cheered Madonna on, and the two worked together for the Women's March in Washington. She has since said that Madonna is very artistic.

Cher and Tom Cruise

Cher and Tom Cruise met in 1985 at Madonna and Sean Penn's wedding and started dating that same year. They bonded over both having dealt with Dyslexia. She had said that when she was with Tom, he was always such a private person.

"I was so crazy about him. He was so wonderful. And he was so, like, different. He was a shy boy. The person I knew was a great, lovable guy." ----- Cher. Cher has also stated that she lived with Tom for a short time, and they split due to conflicting schedules.

Cher and David Geffen

Cher dated David Geffen and called him one of the greatest loves of her life. They dated right after Cher's relationship with Sonny Bono. They discussed getting married, but Cher was scared to marry again so soon. The couple dated for two years.

Even though he came out later as gay, she said they were really crazy about each other. He managed to get her free and clear from Sonny, both personally and professionally. He ended up being a music tycoon, mostly due to Cher.

Single Mother

Cher was a single mother for most of her children's lives. She recalls it has a terrible thing to be a single parent. Cher said she was the permissive parent with her children and that Chastity was just the perfect little girl who toured with Sonny and Cher from six weeks old and on.

In an interview, Cher told Robin McGraw that she has many regrets because her children had to grow up as their mom being Cher. She said her relationship with Elijah has always been very different than her relationship with Chaz. Cher stated that her children are her life and that she did the best she could.

Cher and Carol Burnett 

Cher and Carol Burnett have been friends for a very long time. Cher appeared on Carol's show, "The Carol Burnett Show," and Carol appeared on "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" and the "Cher Show." Sonny and Cher together were guests on "The Carol Burnett show."

Cher and Carol did many skits and songs together, and both had their costumes and outfits designed by Bob Mackie. Carol Burnett was the first woman to have her own variety show. The two were seen often together. 

Forever Cher

Cher gave a two-hour interview for the first time in a very long time to Vogue magazine, a magazine she used to model for. The interviewer noted that Cher had no make-up on, a yellow sweatshirt, and Nikes. She talked a lot about politics and how a large portion of her charitable work is devoted to the veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She told the reporter, "It really should fall on people like me to get together and do things to help the people in this country. If you're not worrying about how to put food on your table, you should be worrying about why other people don't have food on their tables." --- Cher. She also talked at great lengths about her children and said she is who she is and will never apologize for it.
