The American band Green Day released its iconic American Idiot, which later won a Grammy Award for best rock album and was adapted into a rock opera.
Green Day, American rock band that infused the raw power of punk with a melodic pop sensibility and lyrics that captured the angst-ridden restlessness of American teenagers at the end of the 20th century and into the 21st. The principal members were Billie Joe Armstrong (b. February 17, 1972, Rodeo, California, U.S.), Mike Dirnt (byname of Michael Ryan Pritchard, b. May 4, 1972, Berkeley), and Tré Cool (byname of Frank Edwin Wright III, b. December 9, 1972, Willits, California). Other members included Al Sobrante (byname of John Kiffmeyer). Stephen King, in full Stephen Edwin King, (born September 21, 1947, Portland, Maine, U.S.), American novelist and short-story writer whose books are credited with reviving the genre of horror fiction in the late 20th century.
King graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English. While writing short stories, he supported himself by teaching and working as a janitor, among other jobs. His first published novel, Carrie, about a tormented teenage girl gifted with telekinetic powers, appeared in 1974 (films 1976 and 2013) and was an immediate popular success.
