Conner Mantz, Clayton Young, Fiona O’Keeffe, Emily Sisson and Dakota Lindwurm all clinched spots on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics after their performances at Saturday’s Olympics marathon trials.
Mantz finished in first place in the men’s race, with a time of 2:09:05, while Young was right behind him with a second-place finish of 2:09:06. With their finishes, the pair secured two of a possible three spots on the United States’ men’s long-distance running team.
Mantz and Young met at BYU, where they became college roommates and first competed alongside each other, and they now train together when not competing. The two finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, at the Chicago Marathon in October, representing the top two places among American runners in the competition.
O’Keeffe’s run of 2:22:10 set a women’s Olympics trials record by 3:28, while Sisson and Lindwurm also surpassed the previous record with their performances. Those three runners will make up the women’s marathon-running team for the United States this summer.
Leonard Korir was the third-place finisher on the men’s side with a run of 2:09:57, but failed to surpass the mark needed to secure a spot. Korir now must wait to see if someone passes him in the International Rankings by May 5 to find out if he is headed to Paris.
