From actors that are naturally funny to comedians starring in big-screen feature films, comedy continues to draw people in with smiles, hearty laughs, and tears of joy. The Gold Rush (1925)

The Gold Rush debuted when audio was not attached to the moving pictures, but that didn't stop Charlie Chaplin from conveying one of the original comedies in silence! The Gold Rush features Chaplin searching for his animal pal amongst the Alaskan gold rush of 1896. While others were mining gold, Chaplin was making it with this quiet film.

Chaplin engages in funny behavior like eating his boot to fend off starvation and developing funny schemes to find his four-legged friend. Later versions have been created with sound, but the original silent film always tops the modern attempts.

The Philadelphia Story (1940)

If you had three suitors for marriage, how would you choose? Known actress Katherine Hepburn asked herself this question in the 1940 movie, The Philadelphia Story, one of the first movies to enter the genre of romantic comedy. Her options include her boring fiance, an ex-husband that's a millionaire, and a reporter who just can't let go of her.

Wit, romance, and a whole lot of charm went into creating this black-and-white film, and it turned out successful. In the end, you may not agree with her decision, but critics have conspiracies as to why she made the choice she did!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

The British comedy film was created based on the Arthurian legend and was performed by the Monty Python comedy group consisting of Chapman, Gilliam, Idle, Cleese, Jones, and Palin. Holy Grail is an original story that parodies the legend of King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail.

To add, this film has grossed more than any British film showcased in the U.S. To represent its greatness, Idle used the film in Spamalot, the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical. In the UK in 2000, Monty Python was ranked as the fifth-greatest comedy film of all time.

Trading Places (1983)

Capitalism is the name of the game in Trading Places and features Eddie Murphy as Billy Ray Valentine, a smart street hustler that crosses lives with an upper-class citizen, Louis Winthorpe III based on a wager made by brothers Randolph and Mortimer Duke. The comedy film is based on the brother's social experiment of two people experiencing their opposite social class.

The two pawns have their fair share of the other's lifestyle with Billy Ray receiving better treatment, and Winthorpe befriending prostitutes. Trading Places was the fourth-highest grossing movie in 1983 and was considered a box office success.

Ghostbusters (1984)

"Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" Directed by Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray and his band of spirit-fighting friends who decide to suck the life out of any ghost that decides to plague the streets of New York City. The success of the underdog is the theme that gives this comedy film a special space in the top 50 comedy films of all time.

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Remember Pee-Wee Herman? Director Tim Burton made sure you did by translating an old-time sketch show into a popular comedy film. Portrayed by Paul Reubens, Pee-Wee Herman, the hyperactive man-child, creates his own adventure and enlightens the lives of drifters as he searches for his lost red bike.

Reuben's finely-tuned mania is the cornerstone of every smile ever created while watching this film. Fun Fact: this comedy film was the first Tim Burton movie to ever hit the big screen! The movie captures the spirit of childhood joy via immaturity and ultimate fun.

Three Amigos! (1986)

For it being first produced in 1986, Three Amigos! is still one of the most famous comical movies to ever hit the big screen. It features"El Guapo", the smooth criminal, and a young girl named Carmen living in the Mexican village of Santo Poco. In a desperate state, Carmen writes a note to the actors of the "Three Amigos" to save her village people from the bandit.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Ever wanted to skip school? You could take some notes from the ultimate ditch master, Ferris Beuller. From wisecracks, escape plots, to parades, Ferris Beuller's Day Off deserves to be on the top 50 comedy movies of all time.

Matthew Broderick (Beuller) is joined by his friends Cameron (Alan Ruck) and Sloane (Mia Sara) in an epic adventure of skipping school. For its efforts, the movie has been entered into the National Film Registry and the OFTA Film Hall of Fame for Best Motion Picture in 2021.

Harlem Nights (1989)

Harlem Nights is a crime comedy that features a silver-tongue man named Quick (Eddie Murphy), and his adopted father Sugar Ray (Richard Pryor). The two of them own a nightclub together along with their entourage of famous characters including comedian Redd Foxx and actress Della Reese.

Set in 1918 Harlem, the movie follows Sugar Ray after a dangerous competitor learns that their casino is earning more money than his own club. By hiring dirty cops, the competitor tries to shut Sugar Ray down, but Quick is always one step ahead. Harlem Nights was nominated for an Oscar in 1990 for Best Costume Design.

Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone is an annual cinematic classic that showcases Kevin, an 8-year-old that is accidentally left "home alone" after his parents forget to count him along with his 10 other siblings. While alone, he experiences two burglars attempting to infiltrate his house, and he defends it at all cost!

With flames, marbles, paint cans, and cunning intelligence, Home Alone is the 1990 film that creates positive reactions. Macaulay Culkin is the child star famous for this family comedy, and also noted for reciting the infamous line "Keep the change, ya filthy animal!"

House Party (1990)

The 90s were a great time for parties, as evidenced in House Party starring the 1980s musical duo Kid N' Play, alongside the comedic thespian styling of Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell. "Play" (Christopher Martin) is the host with the most who's throwing a live party at his house while his parents are out of town.

Kid has his eyes on the most attractive girl at school and uses his innocent charm to woo her. By portraying themselves, Kid N' Play create an amazing urban musical about best friends that are determined to have the most epic house party ever.

What About Bob? (1991)

A Bill Murray classic is What About Bob? Bill amazingly portrays himself as an obsessive-compulsive narcissist that has an unhealthy attachment to his successful psychotherapist. As the therapist and his family go on vacation, the neurotic and over-dependent character follows them and causes laughable problems for the counselor.

Some viewers may feel bad for Bob, others will dismiss him, but everyone will laugh at the comedic drama that is portrayed in this film. After watching, it's easy to see why it was the winner of the BMI Film Music Award and a nominee for the Awards Circuit Community Awards.

Wayne's World (1992)

Director Penelope Spheeris chooses Michael Myers (Wayne) and Dana Carvey (Garth) as her leading men in the 1992 classic comedy Wayne's World. She embodies the Saturday Night Live actors in a way that showcases the true on-the-spot talent of Myers and Garth.

With absurdity on the surface and a big heart at the core, the duo creates their own public access TV show. By using monologues, "gregarious sex scenes" and numerous climaxes, Wayne's World grossed $121.6 million, making it the eighth-highest grossing film of 1992.

Sister Act (1992)

Whoopi Goldberg debuts as Deloris Van Cartier, a headliner who relocates to California after witnessing a murder. While there, she has some interesting encounters that lead her to pose as a nun, and this is where the fun begins. Deloris joins the Saint Katherine's Convent and is placed as the leader of the choir.

After much-needed practice and some vocal training, the choir becomes a big hit with the congregation and enters a contest performance. Sister Act follows up with a sequel training a youth choir, which was equally a huge hit with critics and viewers alike.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day has a plot that only makes you laugh at the main character, portrayed by Bill Murray. A weatherman ends up trapped in an existential warp where he experiences the same day repeatedly. What makes it funny is since he knows what's going to happen, he makes the best of it by making his whole day creative and filled with fun.

In total, Groundhog Day has won seven different awards, including the BAFTA Film Award for Best Original Screenplay, and has been nominated for 17 other awards, both national and international.

Cool Runnings (1993)

1993 was a solid year for Jamaica as the American comedy sports film Cool Runnings was released. The film represents the true story of the Jamaica national bobsled team's debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Canada. A group of four Jamaican athletes are driven to bobsled, however, none of them have ever experienced cold weather or snow!

Critics have reviewed this movie as "a crowd-pleasing comedy" and inspiring to many Jamaicans and islanders alike. Produced by Jon Turteltaub, the comedy-drama grossed almost $6.9 million in the U.S. alone.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

The late and great Robin Williams portrayed Daniel, a divorced dad and struggling actor who does his best to stay in his children's life. To make it easier, he dresses up as "Mrs. Doubtfire", a cooky elder woman who becomes the children's nanny and is hired by his ex-wife (Sally Field).

The children learn to love Mrs. Doubtfire because of her unconventional mannerisms, playful antics, and potent life advice. This 1993 family comedy is one of William's most known and anarchic performances. The film has won 11 awards, including an Oscar for Best Makeup.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels pull off some of the greatest high jinks in Dumb and Dumber, all for the sake of a woman. After the leading lady - Lauren Holly - leaves her briefcase behind at an airport terminal, Llyod (Carrey) chases her down to return the briefcase and confess his infatuation for her.

His buddy Harry (Daniels) joins him to profess his sentiments as well, and they set off on a hilarious cross-country road trip to Aspen, Colorado, where their lady love resides. Dumb and Dumber has received numerous reviews from critics, with a majority of them being in the movie's favor, deeming it a "must-see" comedy.

The Mask (1994)

The Mask has been deemed "sss-smokin!" by many critics thanks to the sensational performance of Jim Carrey and his love interest, played by Cameron Diaz. After finding an ancient mask, Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) engages in trickster behavior with loony energy after placing the mask on his face and becoming a whole new being.

Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994)

Join Jim Carrey as he searches for "Snowflake", a 500-pound dolphin and mascot of the American football team, the Miami Dolphins. He was stolen right before the Super Bowl and only Ace Ventura - pet detective has the instinct and odd connection to find the animal in such a short period of time.

With youthful energy and an array of Hawaiian shirts, Ace and his charisma use their second-rate skills to find Snowflake. Ace Ventura, Pet Detective also makes our list because of the creative banter and consistent toilet humor that Carrey provides!

Friday (1995)

"Here comes Debo!" So, tuck your gold chain in and enjoy the ever-funny comedy of Friday, starring Chris Tucker, John Witherspoon, Nia Long, and of course, Ice Cube. The iconic phrase "Bye, Felicia" originates from this South Central L.A. film, and features two best friends that owe money to the local neighborhood drug dealer by the end of the day.

As the end of the night grows closer, a variety of interesting characters appear for extra laughs. Only Friday could make drive-by shootings, adulterous preachers, and even ice cream hilarious while providing insightful life advice.

Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1995)

Yes, it's a long title but worth every single word! This parody film is a humorous spin of the hit movies Menace II Society and Boyz in the Hood. The entire film pokes fun at coming-of-age events and cliche stereotypes of African Americans from lower socioeconomic environments.

Ash Tre (Shawn Wayans) and Loc Dog (Marlon Wayans), alongside their older brother and director, Keenan Wayans, maneuver through their neighborhood until Tre finds the woman that he wants to be with. Their urban antics and witty dialogue will keep you laughing from start to finish.

The Cable Guy (1996)

What makes The Cable Guy a legendary comedy is the revelation and exploitation of Jim Carrey's comedic dark side. Carrey performs as the over-eager Cable Guy that latches on to his newfound target, played by Matthew Broderick. In return, Carrey inadvertently drags Broderick into his chaotic and loony world.

Directed by actor Ben Stiller and featuring the comedic genius of Jack Black, The Cable Guy lands on our list because of its nightmarish sequences. It may not have grabbed the attention of many critics, but it's funny enough to make our top 50 list!

The Nutty Professor (1996)

Eddie Murphy is a comedy legend for a reason, one of them being that he is the creator and focus actor of The Nutty Professor movies. Murphy stars as scientist and professor Sherman Klump, as well as Klump's mother, brother, father, and grandmother!

Feeling bad about his obesity, Sherman creates a serum that makes him transform into the young stud within himself. As a result, Sherman engages in side-splitting stunts connected to womanizing and vulgar language while embodied as his fit alter ego, "Buddy Love", who attempts to court his love interest portrayed by Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Happy Gilmore has been voted one of the funniest movies to ever come from a Saturday Night Live actor. Adam Sandler portrays Happy Gilmore, the potentially insane hockey goon who has a thing for hard swings and the love of his grandmother. Sandler uses his man-child essence to deliver a sweet, romantic, and aggressive plot.

Despite the mixed reviews, the 1996 American sports comedy tripled its gross revenue on the amount it took to make it. It won an MTV Movie Award for "Best Fight" featuring Adam Sandler and legendary game host, Bob Barker.

Liar Liar (1997)

Another "must-see" comedy fantasy is Liar Liar, starring none other than comedian, Jim Carrey. After making a wish to "not lie for one day," Fletcher (Carrey) puts himself in mountains of hilarious pain from being so honest, especially since he is a lawyer!

Coming to America (1998)

The young Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) soon realizes that he wants to pick his own bride with a great mind and stellar femininity. As a result, he and his personal servant, Semmi (Arsenio Hall) travel to America to the place they think princesses reside...Queens, New York!

The two embark on a cross-Atlantic journey to end up working at a fast-food restaurant where Akeem meets his potential mate. Through courtship and funny mistakes based on lack of knowledge of American customs, Coming to America is noted for its cultural inclusion, purposeful plot, and upright funny moments.

Rush Hour (1998)

"Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?!" Hong Kong Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) had no choice to understand after hearing his L.A.P.D. partner, Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) yell it at him. The buddy action comedy film features the duo teaming up to rescue a Chinese diplomat's abducted daughter.

Released in 1998, the film made north of $244 million globally and led to two sequels: Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). From beginning to end, this box office hit continues to split sides and be featured on TV channels and current streaming services.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

Mike Myers portrays one of the most iconic characters the big screen has ever witnessed in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. As the storyline goes, Dr. Evil creates a time machine for the pure sake of going back in time to steal Austin's "mojo", which leaves him "shagless" with the ladies.

Myers also plays his nemesis - Dr. Evil - so well that many people are not aware of it...until now! This late 90s action/adventure comedy film was nominated by the Academy Awards for an Oscar for Best Makeup and grossed $206 million!

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)

South Park fans are aware of how this animated comedy movie struck gold in the box offices. This rites-of-passage story takes place in a peaceful town of the Colorado mountains. Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Eric take their place at the forefront and lead each other down a path of egregious comedy.

The first half is filled with below-the-belt verbal (and physical) assaults, while the last half is built on the outrageous paranoid thoughts of the kids! Overall, the 81 minutes of raunchy comedy continues to live on in every South Park fan's mind and television screen.

Blue Streak (1999)

Martin Lawrence only becomes more popular with his 1999 hit movie, Blue Streak. After serving two years in jail for a diamond heist, Miles Logan (Lawrence) portrays himself as "detective Malone" to retrieve the diamond that he hid in a service vent, which became part of the local police department.

Even though he thought it would be easy, he ends up partnering with a real (naive) detective and uses his criminal skills to solve real crimes. Blue Streak is filled with plenty of hilarious moments and grossed over $117 million worldwide.

Analyze This (1999)

Robert De Niro makes our list with Analyze This, a modern comedy about a psychiatrist who has the honor of treating a mob boss that has insecurities of mistrust. Throughout the movie, Vitti's (De Niro) insecurity and Dr. Ben Sobel's (Billy Crystal) anxiety creates pure entertainment for the viewers.

Since its inception, Analyze This has won the American Comedy Award (2000) for Funniest Motion Picture, as well as the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards (2000) for Top Box Office Films. Who knew watching a mob boss receive therapy could be so funny?

Scary Movie (2000)

A parody comedy of the horror movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer", Scary Movie is a modern movie with the perfect blend of spooky and humorous. A year after disposing of the body of a man they accidentally hit with a car (then with a liquor bottle), a group of aloof teenagers are stalked by an idiotic serial killer.

Scary Movie was awarded the Blockbuster Entertainment Award, along with c0-directors and thespian brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans being nominated for Favorite Actors. The comedic film also won the Bogey Awards and Golden Screen Award during the German Film Festival in 2000.

The Original Kings of Comedy (2000)

If you're looking for high-pitched comedy, The Original Kings of Comedy is a perfect fix to your lack of laughter. Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, Bernie Mac, and Steve Harvey - four elite men of comedy - join together to create a live feature film based on their personal and metaphorical stand-up routines.

Cedric provides us with his surprisingly great dance moves, while Mac tells antics of his nieces and nephews. D.L. explains the joys and annoyances of marriage, while Steve Harvey provides his bits in between hosting. It's a grand view for any fan of classically funny stand-up comedy.

Meet the Parents (2000)

One of the most comically stressful movies you'll ever watch is Meet the Parents, a story about a young man enduring the anxiety of meeting his fiancee's parents. Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) goes on a roller coaster of tests with his former CIA agent father-in-law (Robert Di Niro).

Through experiencing suspension and being tested with a polygraph machine, Focker's misfortune is our comedy.  One of the most notable lines that critics rated as one of the funniest was: "I have nipples Greg. Could you milk me?"

Zoolander (2001)

Zoolander is a corky pick due to its hilarious acting, notable dress styles, and quirky premise. Ben Stiller is featured as Derek Zoolander, a once-famous - and still clueless - fashion model that becomes brainwashed to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

He and his nemesis turned partner, Hansel (Owen Wilson) take on the most powerful fashion designer of them all, Mugatu, played by Will Ferrell. The film was nominated for 11 awards and was the winner of the 2002 Teen Choice Awards.

Old School (2003)

Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson put the remainder of their youth to the test in Old School, a classic comedy about reliving the glory days. Mitch (Wilson), Frank (Ferrell), and Beanie (Vaughn) attempt to recapture their younger years by debuting a new fraternity next to their alma mater university.

Elf (2003)

Every holiday season we get to see Will Ferrell dress up like an adult elf and go bonkers about the thought of old Saint Nick, and we love it! Elf is the story of Buddy the "elf", a human who was raised in the north pole by Santa and his real elves. He is on a journey to find his birth father in the United States.

With his innocence and naivety, Buddy causes major havoc in malls, homes, and streets in the name of finding his real father. Through irony and sentiment, Elf delivers many corny Christmas statements from the heart of a simple man-child looking for his daddy.

School of Rock (2003)

Jack Black and Mike White do a phenomenal job at "liberating people with the music" in the 2003 smash hit film, School of Rock! Jack poses as Ned, simply called "Mr. S" as he fakes his way into a substitute teacher position for extra cash, or his roommates will kick him out.

After realizing that some of his students have musical talents, he secretly forms a band and uses his silver tongue to get them into the ultimate contest, the Battle of the Bands. If you're looking for hearty laughter, this is a great comedy film to watch!

Mean Girls (2004)

From being home-schooled in Africa to transferring to an American high school, Cady - portrayed by Lindsay Lohan - has a shocking revelation about what it means to be in the loop of the high school hierarchy, where popularity is the goal for most teenagers.

Throughout the movie, Cady finds herself trapped between the friends that accept her as she is and the "mean girls", aka "The Plastics" clique. Loaded with funny one-liners like "you can't sit with us!" writer and comedian Tina Fey created a funny script for us to enjoy.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

Jared Hess directed the dry comedy film Napoleon Dynamite, and millions of viewers are still happy about it. The lanky and nerdy high schooler Napoleon Dynamite (John Heder) isn't the best at socializing and courting. To fit in, he takes up the skill of dancing and seeks advice from his equally misfit brother and outcast of an uncle.

White Chicks (2004)

The Wayans Brothers are well-known for their comedy and acting, which skyrocketed their popularity in 2004 when White Chicks was debuted. The early 2000s comedy film portrays Shawn and Marlon Wayans as FBI agents who disguise themselves as affluent Caucasian women to find their culprit.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)

The long title entails that the mockumentary comedy has something to say in its unique and funny way. It's hard to keep a straight face while watching Sacha Baron Cohen's guise as a radio host from Kazakhstan. He travels the USA and interviews locals about American standards while shocking them with Kazakh cultural stories that he made up.

The movie also presents the inner thoughts of many U.S. citizens in connection to racism, misogyny, and other unfortunate social topics. Yet, Borat continues to make people laugh by revealing the truth in his own comically horrifying way.

Superbad (2007)

Two co-dependent high school seniors are desperate to get lucky at a party, which drives them to purchase alcohol for extra points with the ladies. The Death of Stalin is a bloody funny movie...literally! Jason Isaacs and Director Armando Iannucci take on the task of performing the death of one of the world's most powerful dictators through satire and derogatory comedy. A few words can be used to describe Iannucci's form of comedy: psychotic, honest, and downright hilarious.
